WOW! REPORT CARDS ALREADY!
Here are more tips for talking about report cards with your child:
- Ask your child how she thinks she did. This opens up the dialogue for any problems she’s having in the class or reasons for a less than stellar performance. And it sets the tone for parents to listen.
- If the teacher is commenting on your child’s chattiness or inability to listen, don’t set yourself up for an argument. Instead of asking why he’s chatty or why she can’t sit still, ask, “Why do you think the teacher feels you have trouble listening?” Getting your child to explain from the teacher’s point of view enables him to think about how his actions are being interpreted.
- Offer specific praise and encouragement instead of broad statements. Try: “You worked very hard to bring up your math grade this period,” instead of “Great job in math.”
- Separate your child from his grades. No parent wants his child to feel his self-worth is derived from what teachers say about him. Consider statements like, “I love you, but I don’t like this report card” as a way to distinguish between the two.

Rounding Numbers Fun
Here's a great video, recommended by Miss Nicholson, that will help you with rounding numbers while having fun. Feed your brain!
Rounded numbers are easier to work with in your head. They are only approximate. An exact answer can not be obtained with these numbers. Sometimes an exact answer is not required.
Understanding The Phases Of The Moon
"Those Are The Phases Of The Moon" is a rap song, recommended by Miss Nicholson, to help you remember the lunar phases. It is sung over the "You Be Killin' Em" by Fabolous instrumentals. The video shows all of the lyrics. Have fun!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Moon is the only natural satellite of the Earth, and the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System. It is the largest natural satellite of a planet in the Solar System relative to the size of its primary, having a quarter the diameter of Earth but only 1⁄81 its mass. The Moon is the only celestial body other than Earth on which humans have set foot.
Place Value Practice To The Thousands
Here is a math video about numbers in the thousands. Quiz yourself or your friends by reading the numbers at the end of the video out loud. Pause the video if you need more time. Have fun!

Wow! Your Backpack Sure Is Heavy!
One day my son's backpack was very heavy. When I looked inside it was full textbooks for homework. Images of children walking with heavy backpacks drooping down their backs, or the child struggling with a rolling luggage/backpack contraption. I wanted to find a solution or, at least, another option.

In my search, I discovered that all of his fourth grade textbooks, except for reading, could be found online. Even though his reading textbook couldn't be found, a really great interactive site created by the publishers for learning, homework help, and extra practice. I even lucked up on finding a website that has links to pages in the Reading Practice Workbook! Enjoy! These links sure make homework easier. The Science is really cool because it has interactive features and most sites will read to you.

Welcome Back To School
Orientation day at my son's school, Hamilton E. Holmes Elementary, was quite interesting to say the least. Getting all of the wonderful information the school had to offer was like being on the trading floor at Wall Street. Everyone there worked hard and did a good job. Then, I finally get to know who is going to be my son's new teacher and to meet her.
Miss Nicholson. Sounds nice. It takes 235 steps from the beginning of the main corridor to the door of her room.
Hi Miss Nicholson!
It was such a pleasure meeting this new and young teacher who has a very pleasant spirit. She has nice teeth too! The classroom looked great and I found out some interesting facts about Miss Nicholson.
She's from New Orleans and loves spicy food and seafood. She was born in 1985 on January 28th, which makes her an Aquarius, if you're into that. Her first name is Neil and her favorite color is purple, which works out great since the school's colors are purple and gold. Go Lakers! Miss Nicholson loves owls! Owls are her favorite bird and her class looks awesome with all of the owl themed decor. One last thing that I can remember is that she genuinely loves to read. She said that she really loved reading and wasn't saying that just because she was a teacher, but she really loves books.
